Swiss
Design

A way of designing where the grid decides everything. Clean sans-serif type sits on strict columns, and empty space does as much work as the content.

What defines it

Swiss design treats layout as a problem to solve with order. Grids, neutral type and asymmetric balance let content speak with clarity.

The modular grid

Every text block and image aligns to columns and rows. Designers plan the grid first and place content second.

Objective sans-serif

Grotesque typefaces with plain shapes carry the message. Text is set flush left with a ragged right edge.

Asymmetry and space

Layouts avoid a centered axis. Large empty areas create tension and guide the eye.

Photography and geometry

The movement preferred objective photos and pure shapes to decorative drawing.

Where it came from

Swiss design grew in Basel and Zurich schools and became the base of modern corporate and interface design.

  1. 1928

    A new typography

    Jan Tschichold publishes Die neue Typographie, arguing for asymmetric layouts and sans-serif type, building on the Bauhaus.

  2. 1940s

    The Basel school

    Emil Ruder and Armin Hofmann teach typography at the Basel School of Design. Their students carry the method worldwide.

  3. 1957

    Landmark typefaces

    Max Miedinger and Eduard Hoffmann release Neue Haas Grotesk, later renamed Helvetica. Adrian Frutiger releases Univers the same year.

  4. 1958

    Neue Grafik

    Josef Müller-Brockmann and three fellow designers launch the journal Neue Grafik in Zurich, spreading the style internationally.

  5. 1981

    The grid book

    Müller-Brockmann publishes Grid Systems in Graphic Design, still a standard text.

  6. Now

    Grids in code

    CSS Grid, design systems and transit signage follow the same logic. Much of interface design is Swiss at its core.

Motion study

Swiss motion is precise. Each element travels in a straight line and stops exactly on a grid line.

Six columns, four elements, every edge on a line. Easing is fast in the middle and sharp at the ends.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Posters and culture

Concert and museum posters use geometry and type as the whole image.

Wayfinding and transit

Railway and airport apps depend on neutral type and a clear grid.

Corporate systems

Brand guidelines and design systems adopt grids and fixed type rules.

Foundations

The tokens every component on this page is built from. Copy them as a starting point, then adjust with intent.

Color

Black and white with one red. Color marks what matters and nothing else. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

  --swiss-red: #E4002B;
  --black: #111111;
  --light-gray: #EDEDED;
  --mid-gray: #5E5E5E;
}

Typography

One neo-grotesque in a few weights. Hierarchy comes from size and position, not from different typefaces.

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Typography: Helvetica Neue or Inter, 900 weight with -0.055em tracking for the hero headline, 400 and 700 for everything else. Flush left, ragged right.
Layout: Strict 12-column grid with 20px gutters. Hero: small meta text top left, a giant red circle spanning columns 5 to 11, a huge two-line headline overlapping it with multiply blend, a facts table on columns 8 to 12.
Signature details: Black, white and one red. Hairline and 2px rules instead of boxes. Asymmetric balance, large empty areas.
Components: Square buttons that invert on hover, cards defined by a top rule, square checkboxes, tables with a heavy header rule.
Motion: Straight-line moves that stop exactly on grid lines, easing cubic-bezier(.7,0,.2,1).
Avoid: centered layouts, rounded corners, shadows, gradients, decorative illustration, more than two typefaces.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Centering by habit

Centered text breaks the asymmetric tension that defines the style. Start from the left edge.

Too many sizes

Pick a short type scale and stick to it. Seven sizes on one page destroy the order.

Grid as decoration

Visible grid lines look Swiss, but the real test is whether edges align when you hide them.

Cold and empty

Strict layouts can feel sterile. Strong photography and one bold color bring life back.
