Paper Cut

Scenes built from layers of cut paper. Each layer casts a soft shadow on the one behind it, so flat shapes gain depth, like a pop-up book or a shadow box.

What defines it

Paper cut design stacks flat shapes into layers. Soft shadows between them make a simple colour palette feel handmade and three-dimensional.

Stacked layers

Shapes sit on top of each other, from light in the back to dark at the front.

Soft layer shadows

Each layer casts a short, soft shadow on the one below.

Organic cut edges

Curves look cut with scissors or a craft knife, never perfectly geometric.

Tonal palette

Several shades of one or two colours create depth, with one warm accent.

Where it came from

Paper cutting is an ancient craft that designers rediscovered once screens could render soft shadows cheaply.

  1. 500s+

    Folk craft

Paper cutting grows into a folk art in China and later spreads to many cultures.

  2. 1926

    Silhouette film

Lotte Reiniger releases The Adventures of Prince Achmed, animated entirely with cut-out silhouettes.

  3. 1940s

    Cut-outs in art

Henri Matisse turns to painted paper cut-outs late in his career.

  4. 2010s

    Craft illustration

Illustrators use real and digital paper layers for editorial art and advertising.

  5. 2020s

    CSS layers

drop-shadow filters and stacked SVG paths make paper-cut scenes easy to build on the web.

Motion study

Paper cut motion works like a pop-up book. Layers rise from the bottom one after another and settle into place.

Each layer starts 0.25 seconds after the previous one, building depth from back to front.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Storytelling pages

Charities and nature brands use layered scenes to tell a journey.

Children's content

Book and education sites use paper textures for warmth.

Travel and outdoor

Tourism sites layer mountains, hills and sea for depth.

Foundations

The tokens every component on this page is built from. Copy them as a starting point, then adjust with intent.

Color

Four shades of teal from pale to deep, one warm sun, all on warm paper. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Move a control to see the token change.

Prompt it

A ready prompt for AI design and coding tools. It names exact tokens and bans the usual defaults, so the output keeps this style's point of view.

Design a responsive landing page for a nature travel company in an authentic Paper Cut style.

Palette: Paper #F2E9D8, Mint #9ADBC5, Teal #3AA7A3, Deep teal #1F6F78, Night teal #0E3B43, Sun #F2A541.
Typography: Young Serif for headlines, Outfit for body.
Layout: Two-column hero: headline and intro left, a rounded paper-cut landscape on the right made of four stacked SVG hill layers from pale mint to deep teal with a warm sun.
Signature details: drop-shadow on every layer, tonal teal palette on warm paper, no borders, cards with an offset paper layer behind them.
Components: Pill buttons that press down, cards with a second paper sheet behind, inset text fields, soft alerts with pill labels.
Motion: Layers rising one by one like a pop-up book, 0.25 second stagger.
Avoid: hard black outlines, gradients inside shapes, neon colours, too many shadow layers.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Shadow mud

Too many dark shadows make a scene muddy. Keep them short and light.

Too many layers

Beyond five or six layers the scene looks cluttered. Simplify.

Low contrast text

Text on mid-tone paper can fail contrast. Put it on the lightest layer.

Heavy filters

Many drop-shadow filters slow down phones. Keep large animated scenes small.
