Living systems

Organic Tech

Product design where a soft case meets a precise reading. Plants, sensors and quiet data share one surface.

What defines it

Organic tech is a product look: moulded shapes, plant colour and a thin technical trace. It is for objects that sense something alive.

Living outlines

Capsules and blobs replace sharp boxes. The shape should feel moulded, not drawn with a compass.

Thin traces

A hairline path, like a circuit through a leaf, links the soft form to a number.

Warm materials

Bone, sap green and a little copper. The copper is the signal, used once.

Quiet data

One reading, large and plain. No dashboard shouting over the object.

Where it came from

The look grows from product design that copies living forms, then adds the small screens of sensors.

  1. 2000s

    Biomimicry

    Product designers study shells, seeds and leaves when they shape cases and tools.

  2. 2014

    Health as nature

    Consumer health brands film glass, water and plants beside their devices.

  3. 2019

    Soft objects

    App icons and device renders turn from flat glyphs toward puffy, rounded forms.

  4. 2022

    Sensors at home

    Indoor climate, soil and wearable products put a number next to a living material.

  5. 2024

    Blobs with labels

    Interfaces keep the soft shape and add a precise caption, instead of hiding the data.

Motion study

The case breathes once, slowly. A dashed trace travels along the path, like a reading moving through the object.

Keep the breath slow. Fast pulsing makes a sensor feel like an alarm.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Home growing

Sensor brands pair a soft product render with one clear reading.

Climate objects

Controls stay round and few, like buttons on a device.

Wearables and rooms

Charts use the leaf green. Copper appears only on the live point.

Foundations

Palette, type, layout, texture and the tokens every component reads. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

Color

Bone paper, leaf green and a little copper. Green carries the product. Copper marks a live signal. Ink is for reading.

  --mist: #D5E3D4;
}

Typography

A soft geometric sans for names, and a plain grotesque for reading. Technical labels stay small and quiet.

Body text carries the explanation. Keep lines under about 75 characters so the eye can find the next line.

Grid

A loose two-column rhythm. Blobs can break the column, but the text still sits on the grid.

Even columns

Equal cards, product tiles, feature lists.

Shape and depth

Large radii, like a moulded case. Shadows are soft and close, as if the object is sitting on a desk.

  --shadow-sm: 0 8px 16px -12px rgba(23,36,28,.3);
  --gap: 28px;
  --pad: 26px;
}

Texture

A fine grain over the page, plus a dotted sensor grid. The dots are decoration. They never sit under small text.

Token playground

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Move a control to see the token change.

Components

Every component below is plain HTML with class names from the kit. Copy the full kit CSS once, then paste any snippet.

Prompt it

A ready prompt for Lovable and Claude Design. It names the palette, type, layout, texture, what to do and what to avoid, so the output keeps this style's point of view.

Style prompt for Lovable and Claude Design. Design a responsive landing page for a home plant and air sensor in an authentic Organic Tech style.

Palette: Bone #F3F0E8, Leaf #1F6B45, Sap #8FBF7A, Copper #C56A3A, Ink #17241C, Mist #D5E3D4.
Typography: Outfit for titles, Figtree for body. Titles are medium weight, not black.
Layout: A split hero: words on the left, a moulded green form with a copper trace and one temperature reading on the right. Then a loose two-column grid.
Texture: Fine SVG grain over the page and a dotted sensor trace. Dots never sit under small text.
Signature details: Pill buttons, blob-shaped media, soft close shadows, one copper path.
Components: Round green buttons, soft cards, pill badges, a slim progress bar.
Motion: A slow breath on the main shape and a dashed stroke traveling along the trace.
Do: Keep one copper accent. Pair every soft shape with a precise label. Leave bone-coloured space around the object.
Avoid: Neon cyber grids, hard black shadows, purple gradients, cartoon leaves on every button, dashboards with six charts.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Cartoon nature

A leaf icon on every card is not the style. The form itself should feel grown or moulded.

Alarm motion

Fast pulses and red flashes belong to errors. A sensor at rest moves slowly.

Copper everywhere

Copper is the live signal. If every rule is copper, nothing is live.

Muddy green text

Sap green is for shapes. Reading text stays in ink.
