Printed color

Dirty Gradients

Colour fields with the dust of print still on them. The blends are a little muddy on purpose.

What defines it

Dirty gradients are mesh colour with grain. They should look printed or painted, not like a smooth software preset.

Mixed pools

A few soft circles of colour overlap. The overlap is a third colour, and that mix is welcome.

Grain on top

Noise keeps the blend from turning into plastic. It should be visible, not a secret filter.

Muddy on purpose

Olive into rose, clay into purple. Clean neon is a different style.

A quiet patch

Titles need a calmer area of the field, or a cream panel, so they stay readable.

Where it came from

Smooth mesh gradients came first. Grain arrived when designers got tired of how clean they looked.

  1. 2010s

    Mesh colour

Illustrators blend several hues in one soft field.

  2. 2021

    Add the dust

Design posts start covering gradients with noise so they look less like glass.

  3. 2022

    A tool habit

Editors add a grain layer as the last step on posters and covers.

  4. 2023

    Print again

Album covers and posters use the dirty field as the whole background.

  5. 2024

    One field

Product sites drop flat grey and use a single grainy field instead.

Motion study

The pools drift very slowly, as if the paper shifted. The grain stays still.

Movement is the colour, not the type. Do not animate the headline.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Labels and covers

Music and poster work live on one dirty field.

Print studios

Tools for posters can show the blend as the product.

Editorial sites

A magazine can use the field behind a feature, then return to cream for the text.

Foundations

Palette, type, layout, texture and the tokens every component reads. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

Color

Cream paper with clay, olive, dust rose and a bruised purple. Overlaps should look mixed, not neon.

Typography

A heavy grotesque for short titles. The same family, at a normal weight, for reading.

Grid

Simple columns. The gradient is the atmosphere. The grid keeps the type in a calmer patch.

Even columns

Equal cards, product tiles, feature lists.

Texture

Several soft colour pools with grain on top. The noise is what keeps the blend from looking like a glossy app background.

Token playground

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Move a control to see the token change.

Every component below is plain HTML with class names from the kit. Copy the full kit CSS once, then paste any snippet.

Prompt it

A ready prompt for Lovable and Claude Design. It names the palette, type, layout, texture, what to do and what to avoid, so the output keeps this style's point of view.

Style prompt for Lovable and Claude Design. Design a responsive landing page for an independent record label in an authentic Dirty Gradients style.

Palette: Cream #F4E6D4, Clay #C45B3E, Olive #5E6840, Dust rose #E3A394, Bruise #6B4E6A, Ink #241812.
Typography: Archivo Black for short titles, Archivo for body.
Layout: Hero is a full colour field with the title in a calmer corner. Sections below sit on cream so the text can be read.
Texture: Four radial pools plus an SVG fractal-noise layer at low opacity, blend mode multiply.
Signature details: Soft radius, visible grain, muddy overlaps, no glossy highlight.
Components: Clay buttons with cream text, olive secondary buttons, cream cards.
Motion: Pools drift over about fourteen seconds. Grain does not move.
Do: Let two colours overlap into a third. Keep grain visible. Put long text on cream.
Avoid: Smooth purple-to-blue blobs, glass blur, neon, glossy highlights, grain so heavy the type breaks.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Plastic blends

A smooth gradient with no grain looks like a default app background.

Neon mud

If the hues are pure screen colours, the mix will not look printed.

Text in the mud

Small type on a busy pool is hard to read. Move it to cream.

Grain overload

Heavy noise turns the page dirty in the wrong way. Keep it even and light.
