Claymorphism

Interface shapes that look inflated and soft, like modelling clay you could squeeze. The effect comes from stacking shadows inside and outside each element.

What defines it

Claymorphism borrows from 3D illustration. Every surface looks puffy and rounded, lit from one soft source above the page.

Big, friendly radii

Corners of 24 to 40 pixels, or full pills and circles. Sharp edges almost never appear.

Double inner shadow

A light inset on the top left and a darker inset on the bottom right make a flat shape bulge outward.

Floating depth

A large blurred outer shadow lifts each object off the background, so it hovers above the page.

Pastel palette

Candy colors with plenty of white mixed in keep the mood playful and calm.

Where it came from

The style sits at the end of a short chain of interface experiments with depth.

  1. 1970s+

    Stop-motion clay

    Studios such as Aardman, founded in 1972, turn clay characters into a familiar and friendly visual language for film and TV.

  2. 2019

    Neumorphism goes viral

    Designers share soft, extruded interfaces where elements seem pushed out of the background. The look spreads fast but struggles with contrast.

  3. 2020

    3D goes mainstream

    Free tools like Blender and a wave of 3D icon packs make rounded, glossy illustration cheap for any product team.

  4. 2021

    A name appears

    Designer Michał Malewicz writes about claymorphism, pairing UI cards with inner shadows and floating clay-like 3D objects. He had named glassmorphism a year earlier.

Motion study

Clay should move like a soft material. Animators call the trick squash and stretch: the ball flattens on impact and grows taller as it rises.

Watch the ball change shape at the bottom of each bounce.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Onboarding pages

Consumer apps use clay heroes to make a first visit feel welcoming.

Children's learning apps

Soft shapes read as safe and touchable, and big targets suit small fingers.

Friendly dashboards

Savings and habit trackers use clay cards to make numbers feel less stressful.

Foundations

The tokens every component on this page is built from. Copy them as a starting point, then adjust with intent.

Color

Pastels for surfaces, one deeper violet for action, and a dark ink for every piece of text. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

  --peach: #FFC6A6;
  --mint: #AEEFD0;
  --lemon: #FFE89A;
  --ink: #2F2A55;
  --mist: #ECEBFA;
}

Typography

A rounded display face matches the rounded shapes. Keep body text in a sturdy humanist sans so it stays readable on pastel.

Clay layouts breathe. Use generous gaps of 24 to 32 pixels so shadows never collide.

Shape and depth

Depth comes from three stacked shadows. Borders are off, radius does the outlining.

Token playground

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Move a control to see the token change.

Variant: Inflatable 3D

Clay's louder cousin. Shapes look blown up like balloons or pool toys, with shiny highlights and stretched, glossy surfaces.

.balloon{width:160px;height:160px;border-radius:50%;background:radial-gradient(circle at 32% 26%,#fff 0 7%,rgba(255,255,255,.4) 14%,transparent 30%),radial-gradient(circle at 60% 70%,#FF6FA8,#E0357A 60%,#A61B55);box-shadow:inset -14px -18px 30px rgba(120,0,50,.35),0 24px 30px -10px rgba(80,0,40,.35);animation:puff 3s ease-in-out infinite}
.pillow{width:220px;height:120px;border-radius:60px;background:radial-gradient(ellipse at 30% 25%,#fff 0 6%,rgba(255,255,255,.35) 14%,transparent 30%),linear-gradient(160deg,#8FE3FF,#3BA8E0 60%,#1F74B8);box-shadow:inset -10px -14px 26px rgba(0,40,90,.35),0 20px 26px -10px rgba(0,40,90,.35)}
@keyframes puff{50%{transform:scale(1.05,.97)}}
.infl-row{display:flex;gap:40px;align-items:center;justify-content:center;flex-wrap:wrap;padding:20px}

<div class="infl-row"><div class="balloon" role="img" aria-label="Inflatable pink ball"></div><div class="pillow" role="img" aria-label="Inflatable blue pillow"></div></div>

Claymorphism is matte and soft. Inflatable 3D is glossy and saturated, with sharp white highlights. Pick one per project, since mixing both looks muddy.

Prompt it

A ready prompt for AI design and coding tools. It names exact tokens and bans the usual defaults, so the output keeps this style's point of view.

Design a responsive landing page for a habit-tracking app for families in an authentic Claymorphism style.

Palette: Lilac #C7B6FF, Violet #8A74F5, Peach #FFC6A6, Mint #AEEFD0, Lemon #FFE89A, Ink #2F2A55, Mist #ECEBFA.
Typography: Fredoka 700 for headings, Nunito 400 and 800 for body. Rounded letterforms only.
Layout: Asymmetric hero with text on the left and a cluster of floating clay objects on the right. Generous 28px gaps.
Signature details: Every surface uses one outer shadow plus two inset shadows (light top-left, dark bottom-right). Radii of 24px to full pill. One light direction across the page.
Components: Pill buttons that press down on click, inset text fields, circular pagination, toggles with a raised white thumb.
Motion: Squash and stretch on bounces, slow floating for decorative objects, nothing faster than 200ms on press.
Avoid: hard borders, sharp corners, pure black text, neon colors, more than one light direction.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Weak contrast

Pastel text on pastel fill fails accessibility checks. Keep text dark and test every color pair.

Two light sources

If one card is lit from the left and another from the right, the illusion breaks. Pick one direction.

Clay on everything

When every element puffs up, nothing stands out. Save the full effect for key actions and hero objects.

Heavy rendering

Many large blurred shadows can slow long pages on older phones. Test on a cheap device.
