Bento
Grid

Content packed into tidy compartments of different sizes, like a Japanese lunch box. Each tile holds one idea and the layout shows how they relate.

What defines it

Bento layouts summarise a product in one screen. A strict grid holds tiles of different sizes, and the size of each tile says how important it is.

Compartments of mixed size

Tiles span one, two or more cells. Big tiles hold the headline, small tiles hold facts.

Tight, even gaps

Gaps of 8 to 16 pixels keep the box feeling packed and orderly.

One idea per tile

Each tile shows a single stat, feature or image. Nothing spills across tiles.

Color as grouping

A few tiles get bold fills to lead the eye, while the rest stay white or neutral.

Where it came from

The name comes from lunch, but the layout comes from dashboards and product keynotes.

  1. 1600s+

    The bento box

Japanese lunch boxes divide food into compartments of different sizes, arranged for balance and variety.

  2. 2010

    Live tiles

Windows Phone 7 introduces a home screen of square and wide tiles, a direct ancestor of bento layouts.

  3. 2010s

    Dashboards

Analytics products arrange widgets of mixed size on a grid, training users to scan tiles.

  4. 2020s

    Keynote summaries

Tech keynotes and product pages sum up features in bento slides, and the term spreads through design communities.

  5. 2023+

    Everywhere

Portfolios, link-in-bio pages and landing pages adopt bento grids, helped by CSS Grid's span and dense packing.

Motion study

Bento motion is quick and orderly. Tiles pop into their compartments in sequence, like someone packing a box.

A 200ms stagger between tiles reads as organised. All at once reads as a glitch.

Where you meet it

These three mockups are built only from the kit on this page. Swap the tokens and they change style with it.

Product feature pages

One screen shows the whole feature set, from hero image to small specs.

Personal portfolios

Designers put projects, links and stats into a single scannable grid.

Dashboards and widgets

Health, finance and productivity apps group metrics into mixed-size tiles.

Foundations

The tokens every component on this page is built from. Copy them as a starting point, then adjust with intent.

Color

A neutral canvas with white tiles, plus three soft fills and black to create hierarchy. Tap a swatch to copy its hex value.

  --peach: #FFD6C2;
}

Typography

One neo-grotesque family with tight tracking on big numbers, and its mono sibling for labels and data.

Change three tokens and the whole page responds, because every component reads from them. Reset brings back the style defaults.

Palette: Canvas #EDEEF1, Tile white #FFFFFF, Ink #121418, Lime #D4F36B, Lavender #D8D0FF, Peach #FFD6C2.
Typography: Geist 700 to 800 with tight tracking (-0.035em) for headings and big numbers, Geist 400 for body, Geist Mono for labels.
Layout: The hero itself is a 4-column bento grid: a 2x2 title tile with headline, text and buttons; a lime stat tile; a black stat tile; a 2x1 lavender chart tile. Gap 12px.
Signature details: White tiles with 1px hairline borders and 24px radius on a light gray canvas. Only three or four tiles get bold fills. No shadows.
Components: Pill buttons (black primary, lime secondary), segmented pill tabs, mono badges, alerts with pill-shaped labels.
Motion: Tiles pop in with a 200ms stagger and a slight overshoot.
Avoid: drop shadows, random tile sizes, dense text inside tiles, full-bleed gradients, more than four accent fills.
Do not fall back on generic AI defaults: no centered hero with a gradient blob, no identical rounded cards with soft grey shadows, no purple-to-blue gradients, no emoji icons, unless this style explicitly calls for them.
Accessibility: body text contrast of at least 4.5:1, visible keyboard focus on every control, labels on all form fields, and respect prefers-reduced-motion.
Deliver one self-contained HTML file with CSS variables for every color, font, radius and shadow token.

Common mistakes

Where this style usually goes wrong, and how to keep it honest.

Random tile sizes

Size should follow importance. Arbitrary spans make the grid feel like Tetris.

Too much in one tile

A tile with a title, paragraph, list and button is a card, not a bento compartment.

Broken mobile order

Spans collapse on phones. Check that tiles still read in a sensible order.

Everything colored

If every tile has a fill, nothing leads. Keep most tiles neutral.
